To reach our sustainability goals, we need to move towards a #circulareconomy based on #renewableenergy, such as #wind. But what happens when all these turbines reach the end of their operational lifetime? For wind turbine blades, this is a big challenge and as such, they are oftentimes landfilled or incinerated – the least desired strategies in a #circulareconomy! To better manage this issue, the creation of a central circular hub as treatment facility for these blades has been suggested.
This is what our graduate intern Wiebke Scheepens has researched the past eight months: which port in the Netherlands would be suitable for the development of such a hub, how much material of end-of-life wind turbine blades in and around the Netherlands could be treated there in the context of different circular strategies, and what economic and environmental implications this would have.
